Windhoek's fashion crowd is heading to Maerua Mall from 5 to 7 November as the MTC Windhoek Fashion Week returns for its 11th edition — and this year, you don't need a ticket or an invite to catch some of the action.

Organisers are extending part of the runway directly onto Independence Avenue, so anybody walking past can sit down and watch the show. Founder Luis Munana says the goal is to give back and show that the fashion industry belongs to everyone — not just insiders.

No theme, no limits

Some have questioned why the platform avoids set themes. Munana's answer: Fashion Week exists for designers to show their latest seasonal work, and themes only make sense when there is something specific to celebrate or communicate. The mission, he says, stays the same — pushing Namibian fashion.

That push is showing results. Namibian designers are increasingly appearing on foreign platforms, taking part in cross-border exchanges and securing panel spots beyond the country's borders.

What's on the lineup

Thirty-three designers will showcase, with talent coming in from South Africa, Zambia, Angola and Germany alongside local names. The Durban Fashion Fair exchange is now in its third year: two Namibian designers head to South Africa while two South Africans show in Windhoek.

The event opens on Thursday with a traditional-attire showcase, this year focusing on the Zambezi region after earlier features on Damara/Nama and Ovaherero garments. Munana calls the garments a history lesson for a new generation — a way to see where contemporary Namibian fashion started.

Maerua Mall hosts for the seventh consecutive year, offering both retail ties and the backstage and runway infrastructure a show of this size demands.

Munana's message to anyone doubting a small population's ability to compete: the talent, craftsmanship and creativity here shock people. Our size doesn't make us less competitive — it puts us in a completely different league.
